My top 10 things to watch Tuesday, Aug. 5 1. Wall Street was heading for a modestly higher open. Monday’s bounce-back rally after Friday’s weak jobs-driven slump broke a four-session losing streak. Club earnings ahead: Disney is tomorrow morning, with Eli Lilly on Thursday morning and Texas Roadhouse on Thursday night. 2. President Donald Trump told CNBC this morning in a wide-ranging interview that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent does not want to be chairman of the Federal Reserve. But Trump said four others are in the running. The president also said pharma tariffs could eventually go up to 250% and semiconductor levies are coming . 3. Eaton shares fell 5% this morning after the power management provider reported only slight second-quarter EPS and revenue beats. The Club name’s current quarter guidance came up short, but the full-year outlook was raised and above estimates. Eaton makes products that help AI data centers run. 4. DuPont beat the tariffs. Taking them down from $60 million impact to about $20 million for fiscal 2025. That translates to 4 cents per share. Incredibly low. Second-quarter EPS and revenue beat estimates. Current quarter and full-year earnings guidance also exceeded expectations. The Club stock rose more than 5%. 5. Diamondbank Energy , considered the best there is by many, said in a letter to shareholders alongside strong earnings: “We continue to believe that at current oil prices, U.S. shale oil production has likely peaked.” Rig count has declined by 60. In oil and natural gas, we own Coterra Energy , which reported quarterly beats. The conference call is later this morning. We’ll be listening and sending out an earnings commentary to Club members today. 6. Palantir delivered a knockout punch to the shorts by demonstrating ultra-high growth and huge margins. Last night’s post-earnings conference call was filled with examples of firms bringing the big data company in, with its proprietary software and models based on OpenAI, and how much money everybody saved. Quite a call, with less bluster than usual from Palantir CEO Alex Karp. Rule of 40 is actually 94. Revenue growth 48% plus 46% adjusted operating margin. I have never seen anything like it. The stock, already up 112% as of Monday’s closed, jumped 6.7% this morning. 7. Dow component Caterpillar reported a mixed second quarter, missing on earnings per share but beating on revenue. Manufacturing costs were higher. 8. Bank of America raised its Oracle price target to $295 per share from $220. The analysts, who kept their neutral rating, were encouraged by the capital expenditure guides from Club name Microsoft and Meta Platforms . Oracle is expected to report earnings next month. The stock rose to around $256 this morning. 9. Citi analysts throw in the towel on their bearish price target on Wayfair , raising it to $93 from $32. They also upgraded the stock, which was trading around $75 this morning, to a buy. It turns out that tariffs didn’t matter as much as Citi thought. Good numbers and really interesting logistics business. 10. Fast food chain operator Yum Brands missed on second-quarter EPS and revenue. Quarterly same store sales at Taco Bell and KFC missed. Pizza Hut’s decline of 1% was not as steep as expected. Total restaurant margins came in lower than estimates.
