Here’s what CNBC TV’s producers were watching as the major averages rebounded Tuesday, and what’s on the radar for the next session. ‘The Worst’ Tuesday was a positive session for stocks. All three major averages were up more than 2.5%. But CNBC stock man Tom Rotunno wasn’t looking at the brighter side of life. He released a list called “The Worst.” Here’s what’s on it. The S & P 500 is on pace for the third worst first-four-month stretch ever. This is the worst start to a new presidential term for the U.S. dollar ever. To this point, this is the worst start to a presidential term for the S & P 500 since 1928. So you don’t have to look it up, Calvin Coolidge was president that year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 9.9% since Inauguration Day. The S & P 500 is down 11.8% since Inauguration Day. The Nasdaq Composite is down nearly 17% since Inauguration Day. The Nasdaq 100 is off 14.8% since Inauguration Day. The Russell 2000 is 16.9% since Inauguration Day. The Dow Jones Transports are 18.6% since Inauguration Day. The New York Composite is down 5.9% since Inauguration Day. .SPX YTD mountain The S & P 500 in 2025 Container ship slowdown CNBC’s Lori Ann Larocco reports tonight that the Long Beach port is seeing a ” steep drop in container vessel traffic ” from China. The number of freight vessels leaving China and heading to the Southern California ports is down 29% week over week and 44% year over year. Adam Posen, an economist who studies China for the Peterson Institute for International Economics appeared on CNBC TV’s 1 p.m. hour ET on Tuesday. He said China isn’t giving in regarding this trade war and that we’re nowhere near a deal. That’s the opposite of what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday . Bessent’s narrative helped lift the market during the session. The Baltic Dry, which measures the cost of shipping certain commodities, was up Tuesday but is down 20% since the April 2 tariff announcement. Diana Shipping was up 2.8% Tuesday. It is down 55% from the May 2024 high. AP Moller–Maersk fell 2.3%. It is off 19% from the March 10 high. The solar stocks CNBC TV’s Pippa Stevens will keep following the group on Wednesday. The Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) picked up 4.5% on Tuesday. TAN is 42% from the June 2024 high. First Solar was up 10.5% Tuesday. It is off 55% from the June 2024 high. SolarEdge was up nearly 8% Tuesday. The stock is down 80% from the May 2024 high. Enphase was up 3.5%. It is off 62% from the June 12 high. TAN YTD mountain The Invesco Solar ETF in 2025 Oklo The nuclear tech company fell in extended trading after news came out that OpenAI’s Sam Altman is stepping down as chairman of the board at Oklo. CNBC TV’s Pippa Stevens was first to report the reason is because Oklo would have more flexibility to potentially explore partnerships with OpenAI and other hyperscalers. The stock is 64% from the February high. But in the last year, Oklo is up 71%. Tesla Shares are up 5% after hours despite the fact Tesla delayed guidance and missed on revenue and earnings in its first-quarter report . CEO Elon Musk hinted he might soon devote more time to the electric vehicle giant. Tesla is down roughly 16% since the April 2 tariff announcement. Shares are down 44% since the inauguration. Tesla is down 51% from the December 52-week high. TSLA YTD mountain Tesla shares in 2025 Netflix The streamer hit another new high today. Netflix is up nearly 7% in two days and up 87% in a year. CNBC TV’s Julia Boorstin will keep covering the stock’s rise on Wednesday. JPMorgan’s Doug Anmuth recently hiked his price target on the stock, which some consider recession-proof, to $1,150 a share. Netflix closed at $1,040.34 on Tuesday. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg is on CNBC Wednesday with airline and auto reporter Phil LeBeau in our 9 a.m. hour. Boeing will release its quarterly report before the bell. The stock is down 7% over the past three months. Boeing is 17.5% from the July high.
