My top 10 things to watch Friday, Jan. 24

1. Wall Street has a new industrial growth favorite: GE Aerospace. Multiple price target boosts for the engine maker following yesterday’s better-than-expected earnings report, which sent shares up 6.6% in the session. JPMorgan went to $210 a share from $190. UBS went to $235 from $215.

2. Guggenheim broke ranks on GE Vernova, another beloved part of the former General Electric conglomerate. Analysts downgraded the maker of gas and wind turbines to neutral from buy, arguing the easy money has already been made.

3. Barclays and Wells Fargo raised their price targets on Discover to $209 and $214 a share, respectively, after its earnings beat, up from $186 and $185. Capital One’s pending acquisition of Discover is expected to close this year. During yesterday’s Monthly Meeting for Club subscribers, I highlighted Capitol One as an intriguing stock.

4. At the meeting, I also went through catalysts that could drive each of our 33 portfolio stocks higher in 2025. That includes a revamped Alexa for Amazon and an acceleration at VMWare that should expand companywide margins for parent Broadcom.

5. Boeing shares fell more than 1% this morning after the airplane maker preannounced an expected $4 billion loss for the fourth quarter. Labor stoppages and supply chain problems contributed to the ugly financial picture.

6. Novo Nordisk shares jumped over 13% in the premarket after its next-generation obesity injection generated 33% weight loss on average in an early stage trial. Novo’s new drug, amycretin, mimics a hormone produced by the pancreas called amylin, in addition to the GLP-1 hormone that Ozempic and Wegovy copy. Club name Eli Lilly also has a next-gen molecule targeting amylin.

7. Twilio is finally starting to realize its potential. Shares surged 17% after the communications software provider offered an upbeat profit outlook at an investor event. Twilio, which is working with OpenAI on its ChatGPT call service, has faced activist pressure in recent years.

8. The latest Apple price target cut comes courtesy of Bank of America, which went to $253 a share from $256. Analysts expect a weaker guidance for the current quarter, due in part to lack of Apple Intelligence adoption. With all the estimate revisions across Wall Street, sooner or later the consensus will no longer be too high for Club name Apple to beat. I explained this week why I’m not changing my approach to Apple, which has made lots of money over the last two decades.

9. Suboptimal earnings guidance from Texas Instruments, pushing shares down about 4%. Inventory builds are contributing to margin pressures. Citi analysts say the weakness is a buying opportunity. On the other hand, a couple shops, including Barclays, lowered their price targets following the report.

10. Everyone always loves Mastercard, and this time is no different. Piper Sandler upped its price target to $591 a share from $575 and kept its buy-equivalent rating. The firm also hiked its PT on peer Visa to $368 from $322. Analysts said using AI to help margins can benefit both companies.
