March Madness (in markets) is hopefully coming to an end. Investors have endured the worst performing months in quite some time as the Magnificent Seven was acutely repriced. I believe April presents an opportunity to own technology after the leading sector recently dipped into correction territory. I want to use the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) to produce an income stream as I have optimism on a rebound in tech. .MAG7 3M mountain CNBC Mag-7 Index 3-mo chart Several factors have contributed to the revaluation of the Mag 7. Tariffs were generally pointed to as the catalyst for the indiscriminate selling, yet investors must recall the overbought conditions of the Mag 7. These tech stocks collectively have had a parabolic move higher. For example, Meta had a twenty consecutive day run in February pushing the stock up to $740 in before retracing and trading under $575 in March. Twenty consecutive days of gains had never happened before, unusual times for sure. Despite the pop in volatility, I have turned positive again on technology, and the premise of this bullish trade is predicated on the fact that we will resolve the persistent trade tariff headwind. However, since volatility is elevated with the VIX around 20, I want to define my risk in the event the Mag 7 decides to take another leg down. Selling a put spread will allow an investor to collect significant premium while the technology sector tries to find some footing in April. The trade Sold the April 17 $210 XLK at-the-money put for $6 Bought the April 17 $205 XLK out-of-the-money put for $2.75 This credit spread allows an investor to collect $3.25 per spread or $325 An investor must be prepared to own XLK at $206.75 and will possibly have a max loss of $1.75 or $175.
